We are looking for a full time Art Gallery Assistant. This position is suitable for those interested in entering the art world as we offer an excellent environment for a budding artist to pursue his/her work in art while at work.

If you are an artist, just imagine what it would be like to be able to produce your own work while learning about the marketing and presentation of artwork, in addition to experiencing a gallery atmosphere.

I am very disappointed with some of the institutions in Malaysia. I thought an institution would be more than happy to help their students by conveying our requirements to their graduates. Who knows, this may launch the career of another artist in Malaysia. But sadly, this is not happening.

Giacometti, the new Picasso

Art Market Insight reported that on February 3rd, Sotheby's London's evening sale was a time for a new world record. L'Homme qui marche I, Alberto GIACOMETTI's human-size bronze was auctioned £58M (£65M premium included), for a £12M-18M estimate, and is now the most expensive artwork ever auctioned.

Giacometti has superseded Pablo Picasso's Garçon à la Pipe that sold for $93M (£51.8M) on 5 May 2004 at Sotheby's. Giacometti has exceeded his own 2009 total sales revenue with one single auction record.

This sale's global revenue is Sotheby's London's most profitable sale (£146.8M premiums included) and points out to the art market revitalizing in 2010 after a 1 and a half-year crisis.

How Art Works can be marketed

I will not be posting any images today.

I will, however, relate what I heard a couple of days ago. Disturbing, not verified but certainly possible.

I was told that there is this art dealer in Malaysia who has images posted online. These are for sale. As soon as an order come through, the dealer will send the piece to China for a copy to be painted. Then the copy as well as the original will be shipped back to Malaysia where the signature is affixed. A couple of artist willingly do that while for others, the dealer will do the honour.

Certainly hope my friends did not buy any of such copies, as was a case in Singapore that was in the news last month where a collector paid a couple of hundred of thousands of USD for some copies. Now that case is in Singapore court pending a hearing.

I certainly would love to hear if such activities are really found in Malaysia.

We, we humbly only sell paintings by artists that we know. Of course we also sell very cheap ones where one does not care who paints the picture that the buyer likes.

CEO takes on tycoon over soured art deal
SINGAPORE, Nov 17 — Two prominent business people will be battling in court over an art deal that turned sour.
Dr Xiaoyan Baumann, 40, wants a refund of US$300,000 (RM1.01 million) for 17 paintings and a wood carving she and her husband had bought.
But the seller, Tong Djoe, 82, is contesting the claim and counter-suing for US$500,000 which he alleges was for another seven art pieces delivered to them but were not paid for.
China-born and German-educated Baumann is chief executive officer of the Singapore Medical Group, which runs a cluster of specialist clinics.
Indonesia-born Tong is a millionaire who made his money in shipping, petroleum and trade.
He operates out of an office in Anson Road. Among other artworks, he is said to own a Picasso.
According to court documents filed by both sides, Tong sold seven paintings and a wood carving to Dr Baumann and her husband Felix Huang in September last year for US$150,000.
These were said to include works by Walter Spies, Wang Yi Dong, Hendra Gunawan and another signed ‘AF’, which is purportedly the initials of painter Affandi, a legendary Indonesian expressionist painter whose works have fetched high prices at art auctions.
Baumann claimed in court papers filed that Tong told her they were original works. He said he would return the money paid if they were copies.
Four days later, her husband met Tong at Ann Siang Hill and viewed more works by Affandi in a storeroom.
Huang chose another 10 pieces which included works by Walter Spies, Xu Beihong, R. Bonnet, Chen Yi Fei and Antonio Blanco, for which Baumann paid another US$150,000.
About a fortnight later, she sent one Affandi piece from the first sale and three other works from the second sale, including those by Walter Spies and Antonio Blanco, to Sotheby’s Singapore to check their authenticity. The auction house declared all four works to be not originals.
The couple then met Tong and his assistant at their Draycott Drive home for settlement talks last November. Baumann alleged that Tong gave a written undertaking to return the US$300,000 paid to him by August this year and to take back the artworks.
As the matter remained unsettled, the couple went to court, represented by Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim, to sue for damages and alleged breach of the undertaking.
Tong, through lawyer Cheah Teck Lim, is contesting the suit. He claims the couple owed him US$500,000 for seven other artworks that he had delivered to their Ardmore Park home.
Even if the couple’s claim were justified, he wants the amount offset against the US$500,000. Effectively, Tong is claiming US$200,000 from the couple.
Tong, who made clear he is an art collector and not an art dealer in court documents, said that at no time did he vouch for the authenticity of the works which the couple bought.
There was no assurance that each of the art pieces was anything other than what Huang saw himself, he claimed in his defence.
A pre-trial conference on the lawsuits is due next month. — The Straits Times

Painting for Feng Shui use

We have quite a few people who ask if we have any paintings that their feng shui master ask them to hang in their premises. One of those that are rather common is the 'bai niao chao feng' painting, loosely translated to '100 birds flocking to the phoenix' painting.

Heritage of Malaysia

This is one scene I would have loved to capture with my camera lens. Anyway, Simon's portrayal of this scene is just beautiful, nostalgic and timeless. Hope he continues to paint and share with us heritage of Malaysia through his brushstrokes. This painting, and a couple of others is at the gallery.

Taking this opportunity to thank my friend, Shane Vink, an Australian artist, who had constantly encouraged me to do more about my photographic works. Just before returning to Australia yesterday, he helped me with the display of my photographs at Art Loft. Now, half a wall is dedicated to my photography works.

Introducing Keng Seng Choo

A senior artist who was born in Kedah in 1945. He was educated at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore.

He had frequently participated in art exhibitions in Singapore and Malaysia, and won The New York International Art Show (Silver Medal).

I really enjoy his work. Was browsing on the net yesterday when I came across a Bank Negara (Malaysia Central Bank) website of their collection of his painting.
